Coffee (Psychotria mariniana)

Kopiko is the Hawaiian wild forest coffee and one can find it in the forests and along the trails, just look for the rippling shiny leaves, dark bark and the fruits. Coffee is in the Rubiaceae family and loves the volcanic, mineral rich soil of Hawaii. Of course there are all kinds of species of coffee known for their amazing robust flavors, too many to list!

I love the taste and feeling of that first sip of great coffee in the morning, it just gets my day going. Some folks say the caffeine is bad for you and the other side says its’ okay, but everything in moderation is the key. Coffee is an antioxidant. It enhances mood, increases focus, alertness and concentration. It has neuroprotective properties assisting in cognitive abilities and even benefiting the prevention and effects of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. It may also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. as well as liver and colorectal cancers. It actually protects the liver and improves heart health. Contraindications is that it can cause anxiety and sleep issues with any increase in caffeine. Moderation is the key.
