Pili Nut (Canarium Ovatum)
The pili nut is in the Burseraceae Family, which is the same family as frankincense and myrrh. Canarium ovatum is only one of 600 species of this tropical tree. Itwas first introduced to Hawaii in 1922 for the purpos of commercial cultivation,although it did not go over too well. Probably because we already had the macadamia nut and the pili tree can be a challenge to grow. It is native to the Philippines and commonly called the “java almond”.
The pili nut is considered a super food because of its high content of vitamins, minerals and protein.. It is a complete source of protein containing all the essential amino acids, making it a ‘complete protein’. One cup of nuts equals 13 grams of protein with 8 essential aminos. It is high in mono-saturated fats, omega 3s and vitamin e. It also contains the highest amount of magnesium, in addition to copper, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, iron, calcium, potassium and all the B vitamins.
Pili nuts are great as an antioxidant, balances cholesterol, benefits bone health, boosts the immune system, beneficial for cognitive development and brain health, energy and reduces inflammation. Not only is the nut edible but the pulp surrounding the nut is edible as well as the young shoots. The sap of the tree is flammable, and can be used like gasoline to start fires.
The pili nut tree is a gift. It is an incredible shade tree and is always giving its fruit, the superfood nut.
